Amy Coney Barrett was sworn onto the United States Supreme Court today. She could decide the future abortions, Obamacare - and even next week’s presidential election.
Amy Coney Barrett just became the sixth conservative justice on the U.S. Supreme Court’s nine person bench.
Her appointment means the Supreme Court will tilt conservative for the foreseeable future.
Barrett’s appointment could mean major changes for:
Abortion policy
Obamacare
Next week’s presidential election
1 - Abortion policy
In 1973, the landmark Roe v Wade case ensured American women could not be prevented from having an abortion by excessive government restrictions.
But the Supreme Court may choose to hear a new case, giving it the opportunity to reverse Roe v Wade. Barrett, a devout Catholic, has remained tight-lipped on whether she believes women should have the right to choose. Supreme Court experts say her appointment increases the likelihood that Roe v Wade is reversed.
2 - Obamacare
Obamacare was former U.S. President Barack Obama’s landmark healthcare policy. It provided health insurance to millions of Americans.
President Donald Trump wants to dismantle key parts of Obamacare. One imminent case will hear arguments saying the law is unconstitutional - and Barrett’s appointment makes it more likely the court invalidates the major reform.
3 - Next week’s presidential election
A battle over mail-in ballots - which in a close election could be a huge factor - is brewing.
Republicans want Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, to only count mail-in ballots that arrive by election day. Democrats want those that arrive in the three days after election day to count.
Barrett’s vote will decide which way the court goes in an upcoming judgment on the matter. If next week’s election is close, her decision could determine who is president.
