Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of corruption
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of corruption and given a three-year prison sentence.
However, he won't actually go to prison - the sentence can be served at home with an electronic bracelet for a year, with two years suspended (meaning he will only serve that time if he does not comply with the terms of his year at home).
WHAT DID HE DO?
Sarkozy was found guilty of trying to bribe a judge in 2014. The judge was overseeing an investigation into Sarkozy's campaign finances.
Sarkozy's two co-conspirators were also found guilty, and will serve time in prison.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Sarkozy had begun plans for a political comeback in France's 2022 presidential election. He had strong support within his party, Les Republicains.
The 66-year-old is the first President to have been sentenced to jail in France's modern history.
