The UK is going into a Melbourne-style lockdown.
"From Thursday until the start of December you must stay at home. you may only leave home for specific reasons”
As COVID-19 cases in the UK ticked over 1 million, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a new national lockdown, which comes into force on Thursday.
The new measures will last through at least December 2.
The lockdown is similar to Melbourne's lockdown, with a number of specific reasons to leave home. People are allowed to leave their homes for education, medical appointments, and to shop for essential goods.
The big difference between the British lockdown and Melbourne's lockdown is in the classification of work - whilst in Melbourne, only 'essential workers' could leave the house during lockdown, British residents who 'cannot work from home' will be allowed to travel to and from work.
Schools and universities will remain open.
Courts of law, construction and manufacturing are allowed to continue.
Private prayer will be allowed in religious spaces, but not services.
Outdoor exercise will also be permitted.
The full list of rules will be published on Tuesday.
