Time to log back on: news is coming back to Facebook
News on Facebook will be back in your feed "in the coming days" after the Morrison Government announced it will today introduce further amendments to the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code.
The key point: Facebook has effectively been granted a month to make deals with news organistaions - if they can show the Government they are willing to negotiate, the Government won't intervene in negotiations.
What’s changed?
One key amendment to be included is the insertion of a two-month mediation period into the code. This means Facebook and news organisations have more time to reach an agreement, before they are forced into Government-led arbitration.
Also, the Government will now be compelled to consider any commercial deals already struck between the tech giants and news organisations before the Treasurer formally designates the code as applying to Facebook and Google.
In other words: if Facebook can show the Government they're working with news organisations to fix the current problem, the Government won't intervene.
"The Government has been advised by Facebook that it intends to restore Australian news pages in the coming days"
