Understanding where the election goes from here
Trump just falsely claimed he won today’s election.
But three states that will determine the outcome - North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania - are still finalising their results.
Understanding where the election goes from here:
Tomorrow, some key states will have results
By Saturday, all key states should have results
If any of the key states are close contests, expect a protracted legal battle
1 - Today, some key states will have results
Wisconsin has been called to Biden. North Carolina and Georgia should all finalise their results overnight AEDT - or at the latest tomorrow morning. The New York Times predicts that Trump has an edge in North Carolina and Biden has an edge in Georgia.
If Biden wins either North Carolina or Georgia, he wins the presidency. But there’s no guarantee at all that will happen - all contests are extremely close.
If Biden doesn’t do that, the election will take much longer to finalise.
2 - By Saturday, all key states should have results
Pennsylvania and Michigan both say they’ll finalise their results by Saturday AEDT. And both look to be extremely close.
There’s a chance we’ll have to wait until all votes are counted in both those states to figure out who becomes President.
3 - If any of the key states are close contests, expect a protracted legal battle
Here’s where it could get messy - especially considering Trump has already threatened to go to the Supreme Court. If the election comes down to razor thin margins from some of those five key states, the courts will get involved. Both sides have hundreds - literally, hundreds - of lawyers preparing for a legal battle that could take months to decide the presidency.
