WHY HAVEN’T WE GOT A DECISION ON THE U.S. ELECTION YET?
Simply put, it’s because 5 key states remain in play. They are:
Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and North Carolina.
According to the New York Times, Joe Biden currently holds 253 electoral college votes, while President Trump holds 214. Don’t forget, the first to 270 wins. So what now?
Arizona - While AP and Fox News have called Arizona for Biden, most other major news outlets have kept the state in play. With 11 electoral college votes up for grabs and 86% of the vote counted, Biden leads Trump 50.7% to 47.9%. Trump has narrowed the margin over the past day, with mail out ballots strongly preferencing the President.
Georgia - With 95% of the vote counted, Trump holds a narrow lead of 49.6% to Biden’s 49.1% - a lead of about 23,000 votes. Trump held a lead of up to 370,000 votes this time yesterday, however strong Biden support in and around Atlanta has swung the needle back in Biden’s favour.
Pennsylvania - 89% of the vote has been counted, and Trump leads 50.7% to Biden’s 48.1%. This is the biggest state still in play in terms of electoral college votes, and is expected to be one of the final states to finalise counting.
North Carolina - Trump leads North Carolina 50.1% to Biden’s 48.7%, with 95% of the vote counted. Mail in ballots in the state have favoured Biden.
Nevada - With 86% of votes counted, Biden narrowly leads Trump 49.3% to 48.7%. If Trump wins Nevada, he will be flipping the state that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.
